That has always required paddlers making up crews to be from a lower band. At one time for all other national regattas, paddlers from the same band could race, as it were sideways, in crew boats, but this of course caused confusion when it came to the MacGregor regatta. Creating a lot of arguments, DQ or rejected entries, after some particularly difficult situations, the Regatta Committee proposed the change to the current wording so that the MacGregor and all other National regattas have the same rule, the SR agreed. 			If service paddlers, who are members of a club, enter events at a Regatta, in which the Inter-Services competition is also run, the paddler may run up against event conflicts. We don't organise the Inter-Services Competition, we just provide race slots at various points over the weekend and they organize their own races. We can't provide any guarantees that their races wouldn't conflict with Club races, and can't know if there were any conflicts until the Timetabling is done, two weeks before the regatta. Normally, Team Leaders notify us, where they identify conflicts after which publish the Timetable. There are too many variables to be able to avoid these conflicts and as such it is part of our regatta terms and conditions.

			A service paddler can compete for a club that they are a member of, as part of a BC sprint event whether that is the MacGregor or any other sprint event and compete for their Service as part of the Inter-Service event which is organised by the military for the military and not open to British Canoeing members. 			As far as anyone racing up a class/age group in crew boats, there isn't an issue if the 50% rule is observed. For example, one BAK in a MAK K2 is okay but you can't have two BAK K2 in the MAK race although you can if that is requested by a national coach. For K1/C1 they can only race out of class at the request of a national coach. ( item 6h, page B12 of the Handbook)

			When that exception was originally brought in the wording included the words '........at the request of a national coach 'for selection purposes'. Those last three words were dropped when on occasions' coaches wanted crews to race against seniors (faster crews) for training purposes rather than for selection. The exception rule was added to allow someone to take part in an event outside of their class if there was a specific or beneficial reason to do so.

			Whether a national coach requests an out of class entry, that doesn't alter the fact that timetabling will not make any allowance for anyone racing out of class and there may well be a clash if a junior races in a senior event. As it did in April when most of the junior in the senior 5k had to make a choice between which event to compete in.
