=Racing-up=

K1 paddlers are not allowed to race-up in a higher class in a K1 unless requested by a National Coach.

‘Racing up’ in the context of an age band does not discriminate or assume one gender is more able than another if of the same age band. It relates to a different age band regardless of gender. Older age bands for Masters racing or younger for junior events.

For crew boats, K2/K4/C2/C4, at least 50% of the paddlers in a crew boat must be of the right class. When events are set upin the system, we also detail which Ability or Age classes are entitled to race-up in this event. This allows entries to be made for paddlers who match these racing-up classes.

The rules state that paddlers of different classes, but in the same 'band' can't race-up in other classes in the same band. Page B12 Item 6 i) Competitors may race in a Standard ...........above their designated class in a crew boat when at least 50% of the crew boat is...' Similar wording is also included in the rules for the MacGregor scoring. There may have been situations previously where entries have been named and accepted at the Team Leaders meeting. It's a matter of trust that the paddler is of the correct class. We have no method to check any late entries at the regatta are of the correct class for the event.

‘Racing up’ in the context of an age band does not discriminate or assume one gender is more able than another if of the same age band. It relates to a different age band regardless of gender. Older age bands for Masters racing or younger for junior events.

20/08/21 - The restriction for 'racing up' for the MacGregor Challenge has not changed for as long as I've (Cathy) been involved with the regattas. That has always required paddlers making up crews to be from a lower band. At one time for all other national regattas, paddlers from the same band could race, as it were sideways, in crew boats, but this of course caused confusion when it came to the MacGregor regatta. Creating a lot of arguments, DQ or rejected entries, after some particularly difficult situations, the Regatta Committee proposed the change to the current wording so that the MacGregor and all other National regattas have the same rule, the SR agreed. I don't remember how long ago that was but several years.

LTB paddlers can race-up in LTA crew-boats.

As far as anyone racing up a class/age group in crew boats, there isn't an issue if the 50% rule is observed. For example, one BAK in a MAK K2 is okay but you can't have two BAK K2 in the MAK race although you can if that is requested by a national coach. For K1/C1 they can only race out of class at the request of a national coach. ( item 6h, page B12 of the Handbook)

When that exception was originally brought in the wording included the words '........at the request of a national coach 'for selection purposes'. Those last three words were dropped when on occasions' coaches wanted crews to race against seniors (faster crews) for training purposes rather than for selection. The exception rule was added to allow someone to take part in an event outside of their class if there was a specific or beneficial reason to do so.

Whether a national coach requests an out of class entry, that doesn't alter the fact that timetabling will not make any allowance for anyone racing out of class and there may well be a clash if a junior races in a senior event. As it did in April when most of the junior in the senior 5k had to make a choice between which event to compete in.

=Age Classes and Ability Classes=

A special condition applies if a paddler could theoretically enter both Ability Class and Age Class based events in a single Regatta. An example would be an Under 23 paddler wanting to race in both U23 events and Ability Classes.

For K1/C1 races, paddlers can only enter an Ability Class '''or an''' Age Class. They can't mix and match. Whatever the decision the K1/C1 entries have to be consistently either Age Classes or Ability Classes for the whole regatta. This restriction doesn't, however, apply to K2/K4's crew boats.

K1/C1 paddlers have to declare which class they intend to race though for each regatta or for each season. They can't race in both classes in any specific regatta as for timetabling reasons we can't address any potential conflicts that this could cause.

=Events comprising Age Classes and Ability Classes=

If an Event comprises both Ability Classes and Age Classes, e.g. Mens A & B + Mens U23, and a paddler is eligible to enter in both the Ability Classes and Age Class, for an entry to be recognised for that paddler they need to be entered both the Ability Class and Age Class.

=De-duplicate or approved Incomplete or Unconfirmed Entries=

If there are duplicate entries or if you need to accept Unconfirmed or Incomplete entries, use the following link syntax substituting the number at the end of the link with the number for the specific event

https://canoesprint.britishcanoeing.org.uk/competition/events/checkup/11

At present, the entry costs associated with Incomplete or Unconfirmed entries, which are subsequently accepted using this Admin feature, aren't currently being charged back to the respective clubs or squads.

==Filling incomplete boats==

If that’s the reason then that’s helps me understand it better, so the next question is – if I get another name I can add that at the TL meeting otherwise, if I opt to scratch that entry on sat morning & then enter her is say girls D or something (for example) would the (some of the) money I paid for the Lightning entry carry over??

>> Yes, if you find another paddler before the Team Leaders' meeting, or even in the Team Leaders' meeting, then this name can be added. I'll have to let Cathy answer on cost impacts for a scratch and re-enter, as I'm not sure if this then results in a late entry fee. I'm also a newbie ;-)

I think the best thing for you to do is try to get another partner for your Lightning paddler at the team leaders meeting. Failing that look at the K1 Lightning entries and see if there is a paddler who is not in a crew boat and talk to their team leader/coach.

We do not normally transfer payments to different events.

I hope this helps and please come and see us at the secretary's desk if you are unsure of anything on the day.

As Wendy has said, your best bet is to look through the other lightning paddlers to see if there's any available to make up the K2. As the event is on Sunday you can delay naming the 2nd paddler till after the Team Leaders meeting if you require more time to find another paddler. There are forms at the Secretaries Desk to either add the second name or deleted the entry. This must be done at least 60 minutes before the race will be run.

Once the entry has been deleted it cannot be reinstated in either in the same event or transferred to anther event.

=Late entries=

Late entries have to be submitted through the Team Leaders' meeting. As you can imagine, when running a regatta with approx 150 different events, we have to have a formal cut-off for entries to allow us to progress the timetabling, which is a complex beast. Entries submitted after the cut-off have the potential to really mess up the timetabling. We do, however, support late entries at the Team Leaders' meeting as we may well have spare lanes for particular events and/or people may scratch from existing events opening up spare lanes.<br>

The Team Leaders' meeting is held at 8am on the Saturday of each regatta.

=Service paddlers=

A service paddler can compete for a club that they are a member of, as part of a BC sprint event whether that is the MacGregor or any other sprint event *and* compete for their Service as part of the Inter-Service event which is organised by the military for the military and not open to British Canoeing members. The Inter-Service events do not score points toward the MacGregor if the competition is held at the same time.

What the paddlers can't do is compete for a club at a BC sprint regatta and then compete for ACU, RAF or RNP at any other BC sprint event, in the same year. The significant difference is that one event is open to British Canoeing paddlers, the other isn't.

If service paddlers, who are members of a club, enter events at a Regatta, in which the Inter-Services competition is also run, the paddler may run up against event conflicts. We don't organise the Inter-Services Competition, we just provide race slots at various points over the weekend and they organize their own races. We can't provide any guarantees that their races wouldn't conflict with Club races, and can't know if there were any conflicts until the Timetabling is done, two weeks before the regatta. Normally, Team Leaders notify us, where they identify conflicts after which publish the Timetable. There are too many variables to be able to avoid these conflicts and as such it is part of our regatta terms and conditions.
